Salesforce Reports: $USER Filter Returns No Results for Users with Middle Names Enabled

This article explains why the $USER filter in Salesforce reports returns no results for users with a middle name, and how to work around it.

Why This Happens

This is expected behavior. Filtering on $User matches the user's Name field, which is a concatenation of FirstName and LastName. When middle names are enabled, that concatenation can differ from what the $USER filter expects, so users with a middle name may see no results on reports that filter using $USER.

Workaround

Affected users have two options:

• Temporarily disable middle name support in the org (Setup > User Management Settings > Enable Middle Names for Person Records), or
• Use a filter based on Username or User ID instead of the Name field, since these are not affected by the concatenation behavior.
