You can see this error when you use the metadata deploy() method or run a package upgrade and either of those deployments contains the conversion of a custom field from one data type to another. For example, if a custom field is being converted from text to picklist. The deployment fails with the error “The deployment failed because we couldn’t change the data type of one or more custom fields.”
This error occurs when: (1) a deployment changes the data type of one or more custom fields and (2) the objects that contain the affected custom fields contain a large amount of data. The limit is 85 million custom field type conversions.
