Keep these guidelines in mind when sending MMS messages in MobileConnect and Journey Builder. To use media for MMS in Journey Builder, you must first upload the file to Content Builder.

Supported File Types and Sizes

  • Images: GIF, JPEG, JPG, or PNG. We recommend keeping static MMS images files under 500 KB.

  • Videos: AVI, MPG, MPEG, or MOV. We recommend keeping the video files under 5 MB.

  • Audio: MP3 or WAV. We recommend keeping the audio files under 1 MB.

  • Document: VCF. We recommend keeping the files under 500 KB.

Static Images

Optimal Dimensions

 We recommend a 1080px by 1920px image with a 9:16 aspect ratio.

Safe Zones

When designing your image, place all key content in the safe zone to make sure it's readable in the message bubble view.

  • 480px by 480px: Avoid the top 39px, right 39px, bottom 39px, and left 44px.

  • 1080px by 1920px: Avoid the top 250px and bottom 250px.

File Format

  • Use a .jpg file, as it renders faster and is supported on more devices than .png file.

  • If you use a .png file, remove any transparency. Recipient devices will automatically fill transparent areas with a color you can't control.

Animated GIFs

Animated GIFs are .gif files that loop without sound.

Recommended Dimensions

  • Portrait/Vertical: 480px wide by 720px tall (for less animation) or 480px wide by 640px tall (for more animation).

  • Square: 640px wide by 640px tall (for less animation) or 480px wide by 480px tall (for more animation).

Image Design Considerations for Animated Gifs

  • 480px by 720px: Avoid placing content of interest in the 39px at the top, right, and bottom of the gif. Also avoid adding such content in the 44px on the left side of the gif.

  • 480px by 640px: Avoid placing content of interest in the 65px at the top, and the 58px at the bottom of the gif. Also avoid the 39px to each side of the gif.

  • 640px by 640px: Avoid placing content of interest in the 52px at the top, right, and bottom of the gif. Also avoid adding content in the 58px on the left side of the gif.

  • 480px by 480px: Avoid placing content of interest in the 39px at the top, right, and bottom of the gif. Also avoid adding such content in the 43px on the left side of the gif.

Tips to Decrease File Size

  • Keep your animations short and simple.

  • Lower the Frames Per Second (FPS). We recommend a range of 2–4 FPS.

  • Limit the number of colors in your file.

Important Considerations

  • Always save and upload your animated images as .gif files.

  • Don't include any transparent areas in your file.

  • If a recipient's device is on iOS version 13–13.4, a GIF with a width greater than 320px can appear too large. This was fixed in iOS 13.5.

Videos

Recommended File Size

  • Without Transcoding: Keep files under 500 KB, with a hard limit of 740 KB.

  • With Sinch Transcoding: Files must be kept under 10 MB, as they'll be compressed to a final size ranging from 300 KB to 1.5 MB.

  • For large subscriber bases (hundreds of thousands or more), use files of 300 KB or smaller to ensure fast delivery.

Recommended Dimensions

  • Landscape (Horizontal): 1280px by 720px

  • Portrait (Vertical): 720px by 1280px

Additional Tips

  • Videos under 15 seconds will be delivered in HD quality to most devices. Videos over 20 seconds will vary in quality depending on the network and device.

  • Use a frame rate of 30 FPS.

  • Improve video quality by using slower movements, solid colors, and spoken audio instead of music.

  • Use .mp4 as the source file format.

VCF Files

Considerations for Uploading VCF Files

Review these considerations before uploading a virtual contact file (VCF) to ensure a successful import.

  • Each file must begin with BEGIN:VCARD and end with END:VCARD.

  • Use vCard version 2.1, 3.0, or 4.0.

  • Specify the value for Name (N) or FormattedName (FN) property fields.

  • Ensure profile images are Base64-encoded according to the specific vCard version requirements.

  • Fields like Job Title, Organization, or Address are optional.
