When a Journey Builder send targeting Contacts uses a WhatsApp Message Template with missing or invalid parameters, the send fails with error code 100. As documented in Meta's WhatsApp Cloud API error codes, error 100 indicates a missing or invalid parameter within the WhatsApp message being sent.

This error most commonly occurs when:

  • A dynamic variable in the WhatsApp Message Template references an AMPscript attribute that is empty or incorrectly configured.
  • The Journey Entry Source contains contacts with null or missing values for fields that are mapped to WhatsApp template variables.

Resolution: Two Areas to Review

Area 1: Review the WhatsApp Message Template in Content Builder

  1. Navigate to Content Builder in Marketing Cloud.
  2. Open the WhatsApp Message Template used in the failing Journey.
  3. Review each variable in the template and confirm whether it is configured as:
    • Static — a fixed value hardcoded in the template.
    • Dynamic — a Personalization String populated via AMPscript at send time.
  4. Verify that all dynamic variables have a valid AMPscript expression and that the referenced attribute exists and contains data.
