Marketing Cloud Engagement Legacy Editions, Tenant Types and Roles

Publish Date: Mar 24, 2025
Description

Tenant is a unique, top-level account and its associated business units, or a single account, depending on the tenant type (Enterprise, Core, Agency, or Client). It's essentially a logical grouping for data, assets, and access within the platform.

There are 4 types currently -

  1. Core
  2. Agency
  3. Enterprise
  4. Enterprise 2.0

For more details about these, check out Marketing Cloud Engagement Tenant Types

NOTE: Tenant Types are different from Marketing Cloud Engagement Editions.

Core tenant - Core Edition Admin related Roles:

  • Create / View Accounts
  • Marketing Cloud Admin
  • Add Users to Account
  • Access Administration
  1. If ‘Marketing Cloud Admin’ role is assigned, Setup is accessible. As an alternative, or if that role is not assigned, the Email Studio Admin would be available by navigating to Email Studio > Email > Admin > My Users
  2. If ‘Access Administration’ is assigned, Setup is accessible but ‘Admin’ tab is not available in Email Studio
  3. ‘Add Users to Account’ and ‘Access Administration’ Roles are equivalent to the current ‘Administrator’ Role. Adding either or both the roles will grant Email Studio Admin access.

The above behavior was observed similar in both the old Stacks like S1 as well as relatively newer ones like S10.

Agency and Enterprise tenants - Core Edition Admin related Roles:

  • Create / View Accounts
  • Marketing Cloud Admin
  • Add Users to Account
  • Access Administration

The difference from the Core tenant type is Agency allows to add Accounts that can be treated as separate tenants

  1. ‘Create/View Accounts’, ‘Add Users to Account’ and ‘Access Administration’ Roles are equivalent to the current ‘Administrator’ Role. Adding either or all the roles will grant Email Studio Admin access.
  2. If ‘Marketing Cloud Admin’ role is assigned, Setup is accessible. As an alternative, or if that role is not assigned, the Email Studio Admin would be available by navigating to Email Studio > Email > Admin > My Users

An Enterprise tenant includes multiple MIDs. A Core tenant includes a single top-level account with one MID. An Agency tenant includes only the top-level account. The difference from the Core tenant type is that the Agency tenant allows to add Accounts that can be treated as separate tenants
