Considerations for Shape Layer Data from Salesforce Maps

Дата публикации: Jun 2, 2025

A common request is to automate the creation of shape layers or export the geometry data from the Salesforce Maps shape layer. This article will provide important considerations and expectations when interacting with the managed package objects in particular Shape Layers and the related geometry records.

Salesforce Maps include boundary data sourced from numerous third-party data providers. Boundaries from these data providers can differ from your sources as mentioned here. Below are some important considerations for shape layers:

  • Shape layer data is subject to change, and the latest data provided will update existing shapes.
  • Creating or editing shape layers outside of the Salesforce Maps user interface is not supported.
  • When a shape layer is edited, the related geometry record is deleted, and a new one is created, so adding automation to these objects is not recommended or supported.
  • Plotting shapes with complex or large geometries can reduce performance.
  • By default, shape layers are set to plot with merge boundaries on.
  • Travel and distance time shapes are based on historical traffic trends.
  • Shapes created using drawing tools will not include boundaries, just the vertices on the outline of the shape.
  • Provided data that is updated less frequently may consist of drastic changes in geometry once updated. For example, US census data is updated every 10 years.
  • You can view the geometry data on the maps__ShapeLayerGeometry__c object by creating a custom report or exporting the data stored in the geometry field(s). Please note that editing these fields can corrupt the related shape layer, resulting in errors when plotting the shape in the user interface.
  • Deploying data related to the SF Maps package from one environment to another is not supported as mentioned here.
