Troubleshooting Decision Splits in Journey Builder

Дата публикации: Jun 17, 2025
Описание

The Decision Split in Journey Builder routes contacts based on defined filter criteria, evaluating paths from top to bottom. If a contact qualifies for multiple paths, they follow the first match; otherwise, they go to the Remainder path. However, issues can occur where contacts don't follow the intended path. To avoid this, refer to the resolution steps provided below.

When using Decision Splits in Journey Builder, especially with data coming from CRM via Synchronized Data Extensions (Sync DEs), it's important to understand certain scenarios where splits may not work as expected. Below are common issues and their recommended resolutions.

1. Decision Split Fails in One-to-Many (1:M) Relationships

Issue:
Decision Splits may not function correctly if there is a one-to-many relationship between the Contact Key and related records. For example, if a contact has multiple associated cases in the CRM, the Decision Split might fail due to multiple matching records returned.

Resolution:
Use Attribute-to-Attribute Comparison in the Decision Split and ensure that you're comparing against a unique value. Add an additional field in the AND condition that ensures uniqueness (e.g., Case Number or another unique identifier) to make the logic work properly in 1:M scenarios.
2. Decision Split Not Working with Data Designer Attribute Groups

Issue:
When using Data Designer to create an Attribute Group linked to a Data Extension, Decision Splits may not behave as expected—especially if data is missing or overwritten in the linked DE.

Resolution:
Ensure the following:

The necessary data is present in the linked Data Extensions at the time the contact reaches the Decision Split.

Avoid updates or overwrites to the Data Extensions linked in Data Designer once the Journey is live, as this may disrupt the decision logic.

3. Best Practices for Testing Decision Splits

Before launching a Journey:

Create a test journey using static data with the same configuration.

Run the journey in test mode to verify the Decision Split behaves as expected.

This helps confirm whether any issues are related to the data itself or the configuration.

4. Matching Sendable Relationships Correctly

Issue:
When using a Linked Data Extension in an Attribute Group, the Decision Split may not work if the sendable relationship field is misconfigured.

Resolution:
Ensure that the field used in the sendable relationship of the Linked Data Extension matches the entry source DE field used in the Journey. A mismatch will cause the split to fail, and contacts may go down the default (remainder) path or follow an incorrect path.

Following these guidelines will help you configure reliable and predictable Decision Splits in Journey Builder, especially when working with complex data relationships or synchronized CRM data.
