After adding new values to a Salesforce picklist field, users may find that the new values do not appear when editing a record, or that alphabetical ordering applied during setup is not reflected on the page. This can be caused by several configuration issues including inactive status, missing record type assignment, unresolved field dependencies, or insufficient profile permissions.
When a newly created picklist value does not appear on a Salesforce record, it is typically caused by one of six configuration issues. Work through each cause below until the issue is resolved.
Ensure the picklist value is active in the field definition. Navigate to Setup | Object Manager | [Object Name] | Fields & Relationships | [Picklist Field Name] | Edit and confirm the value is marked as active. If the picklist uses a global value set, check the active status of the value in the global value set as well.
Verify that the picklist value is available for the specific record type the user is working with. Navigate to Setup | Object Manager | [Object Name] | Record Types | [Record Type Name] | Picklists Available for Editing | Edit and confirm the value is included.
If the field is a Sales Process field (such as Opportunity Stage), check the Sales Processes settings: Setup | Sales Processes | [Process Name] | Define Stage Picklist Values.
If the picklist is a dependent field controlled by another (controlling) field, the new value must also be added to the appropriate controlling field's dependency matrix. Navigate to Setup | Object Manager | [Object Name] | Fields & Relationships | [Picklist Field Name] | Field Dependencies and update the matrix to include the new value.
Ensure the user's profile has the necessary Read and Edit permissions for the picklist field and the related record type. Users without sufficient permissions may not see or be able to select the new value.
If the expectation is that the new picklist value should appear as a default, confirm that it has been set as the default value in the field definition or within the specific record type configuration.
