Changing Record Types

The steps below describe how to change a record type. In this example, the Opportunity object is used. Replace it with the appropriate object as needed.

Method 1: Using the “Change Record Type” Button

Step 1: Add the “Change Record Type” Button to the Page Layout

1. Click Setup from the gear icon in the upper-right corner
2. Go to Object Manager and select Opportunity
3. Click Page Layouts, then open the relevant layout
4. In the palette, select Mobile & Lightning Actions
5. Drag Change Record Type into the Salesforce Mobile and Lightning Experience Actions section
6. Click Save

Step 2: Change the Record Type

1. Open the Opportunities tab and select a record
2. On the record detail page, click Change Record Type in the upper-right corner
   1. If not visible, click the dropdown arrow (▼) next to Edit and look for it there
3. Select the desired record type and confirm the change

Method 2: Using the “Record Type” Field

Step 1: Add the Record Type Field to the Page Layout

1. Click Setup from the gear icon
2. Go to Object Manager and select Opportunity
3. Click Page Layouts, then open the relevant layout
4. From the palette, select Fields
5. Drag Opportunity Record Type into the desired section (for example, Opportunity Information)
6. Click Save

Step 2: Change the Record Type

1. Open the Opportunities tab and select a record
2. On the record detail page, locate the Opportunity Record Type field
3. Click the change icon (circular arrow) next to the field
4. Select the desired record type and save

Additional Notes

Changing between Business Accounts and Person Accounts is not supported from the record detail page

If a record type is not assigned to the user’s profile, it may still appear in the UI, but it will not be selectable
