When Tableau Server uses a proxy server, the following error occurs when connecting to data:
PKIX path building failed: sun.security.provider.certpath.SunCertPathBuilderException: unable to find valid certification path to requested target
The operating system hosting Tableau Server does not trust the SSL certificate presented by the proxy. This causes the initial SSL/TLS handshake to fail, preventing Tableau Server from building a valid certificate chain for authentication during connection.
To resolve this issue, import the proxy server’s root certificate into the system-wide trust store of the operating system (OS) where Tableau Server is running. Doing so ensures that all applications on the OS—including Tableau Server—can recognize and trust the certificate presented by the proxy server.
Note: The steps for importing a certificate vary by operating system. For detailed, platform-specific instructions, consult the official documentation for your OS or contact your system administrator.
