Tableau Server - Synchronize changes to the user display name or email address in Active Directory

Publiceringsdatum: Jul 22, 2026
Beskrivning

When a user's display name or email address is updated in Active Directory (AD), the change does not automatically synchronize with Tableau Server. This applies to Tableau Server environments configured with an Active Directory identity store.

Lösning

After you update a user's email address in Active Directory (AD), Tableau Server does not update the user information by default. Follow the option that matches your environment.

Option 1: Users are added to Tableau Server via AD groups

  1. Configure Tableau Server to update display names and email addresses from AD. Run these TSM commands.
    tsm configuration set -k vizportal.adsync.update_system_user -v true
    tsm pending-changes apply
  2. As a server administrator, synchronize all external directory groups on demand. See the Tableau help article:
Synchronize All External Directory Groups on the Server

Option 2: Users are added individually to Tableau Server

  1. Create a CSV file. Put each username in the first column. Do not include a header row.
    user,,,,,,
    user02,,,,,,

    Note:

    • Importing a CSV that contains existing usernames does not create duplicate users. This forces Tableau Server to re-query AD and refresh the user's display name or email address.
    • The six commas are empty fields required for correct column positioning in Tableau Server's CSV import.
    • If the user's domain differs from the Tableau Server machine, use <username>@<domain> or <NetBIOS name>\<username>.
  2. Sign in to Tableau Server as a server administrator. Click Manage All Sites from the site picker in the upper left.
  3. Click Users. Select Add Users > Import Users from File.
  4. Select the CSV file from step 1. Click Import Users.

Thank you for your time. The instructions above apply to the described scenarios.
