Understanding How Categorization Rules Apply to Product Assignments

Categorization rules are designed to streamline and automate the classification of products into appropriate categories. These rules can assign products to categories or modify existing assignments—such as designating a primary category—under specific conditions.

When Categorization Rules Can Apply

Categorization rules will assign or update category assignments only when one of the following conditions is met:

  1. The product has not been manually assigned to a category
This includes any category assignment made directly by a user or through an import process. Once a manual assignment exists, the categorization rules will not override it.

  2. The product is not currently assigned to the relevant category
If a product has no existing category assignment for the relevant category, the categorization rules are eligible to apply and can both assign a category and designate it as primary, if applicable.

Important Notes

  • Categorization rules are intentionally designed to not overwrite manual inputs to preserve intentional user actions.

  • If products are not being assigned a category as expected, it's recommended to verify whether a manual category assignment exists.

Steps to Resolve the Issue

  1. Remove the manual category assignment
Unassign the product from the category it was manually added to.

  2. Re-run the categorization rule
Execute the categorization rule for the relevant category to allow the system to reassign the product automatically and apply the primary category designation as needed.
