When attempting to delete a child Business Unit (BU) in Marketing Cloud, you may find that the delete button is unavailable or the target BU is not visible in the list. Deletion of a BU can only be performed by an administrator logged into the Parent BU (Enterprise ID). Additionally, you must remove all user assignments from the target BU before it can be deleted.
Deleting a Business Unit permanently removes all associated assets (emails, content, Data Extensions, etc.) and they cannot be restored. Before proceeding, please carefully review and execute the following preparations:
Backup Assets and Data: Move necessary content, Data Extensions, and reports to another BU, or export them to your local environment.
Stop Processes: Stop or complete all active scheduled processes, including Journeys (Journey Builder) and Automations (Automation Studio).
Disable FTP Users: Disable any FTP user accounts associated specifically with the target BU.
You can only delete a BU after all user assignments have been removed.
Log in to the Parent BU: Ensure you are logged into the top-level Parent Business Unit (Enterprise ID).
Navigate to Management: Go to Setup > Administration > Business Units.
Remove User Assignments:
Select the BU you wish to delete and manage users to remove all assignments.
Verify that the "User Count" for the target BU in the list is 0.
Execute Deletion: Check the box next to the target BU and click the Delete button.
If you encounter the following issues, the root cause is likely that you are attempting the operation from a Child BU instead of the Parent BU.
Symptoms:
The target BU does not appear in the [Business Units] list.
The checkbox for a specific BU is grayed out and cannot be selected.
You cannot uncheck/remove user assignments.
After removing yourself from a BU, the BU disappears from your view, making further actions impossible.
Solution:
Log out and log back in to the Parent BU (Enterprise ID). From the Parent BU, you will have full visibility of all child BUs and the permissions required to modify user assignments and delete units.
