Location Data May Not Be Recognized in Tableau Web Authoring

Publiseringsdato: Nov 6, 2025
Beskrivelse

Geographic data may fail to plot correctly on a Tableau map in the web authoring environment, even when the location names or spelling conventions appear correct.

Cause:

This behavior can occur if a location name or abbreviation is not recognized by Tableau's geographic database, or if the location is ambiguous (e.g., the same name exists in multiple countries or regions).

Løsning

The following options may help resolve geographic ambiguity and ensure data is plotted correctly.

Option 1: Provide More Geographic Fields

Adding a higher-level geographic field (such as State/Province or Country/Region) to the view can help Tableau resolve ambiguity. This action can be performed in both Tableau Desktop and Web Authoring.

  1. Drag the appropriate parent geographic field (e.g., [State] or [Country]) onto the Detail shelf on the Marks card.

  2. If the higher-level field (like Country) does not exist in the data source, a Calculated Field can be created to provide this context.

Example: If plotting unrecognized Japanese Prefectures:

    1. Create a Calculated Field named Country/Region
    2. Use the formula: "Japan"
    3. Assign the Geographic Role of "Country/Region" to this new calculated field.
    4. Drag the Country/Region field onto the Detail shelf in the view.

Option 2: Manually Edit Locations (Requires Tableau Desktop)

The Edit Locations feature allows for manual mapping of unrecognized data values to known locations.

Note: This feature is currently not available in Web Authoring (Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server). This process must be completed using Tableau Desktop.

    1. Open the workbook in Tableau Desktop.
    2. From the main menu, select Map > Edit Locations....
    3. In the Edit Locations dialog, manually match the unrecognized location names to the correct, known locations in Tableau's database.
    4. Select OK.
    5. Publish the workbook (or data source) to Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server. The manually corrected locations will now display correctly in the web environment.
