This document explains when the "HTML enabled" status in the All Subscribers list in Marketing Cloud Engagement — which indicates whether a subscriber can receive HTML emails — is updated.
This flag is not automatically updated based on subscriber behavior such as email opens. It is only updated through explicit actions: either by an administrator directly modifying the data, or by a subscriber updating their preferences via the Preference Center.

How the "HTML Enabled" Status Works

The "HTML enabled" status in the All Subscribers list in Marketing Cloud Engagement is a flag that indicates whether a subscriber is able to receive HTML-formatted emails.
The most important thing to understand about this status is that it is not automatically updated based on subscriber engagement such as email opens or clicks.
Any change to this status always requires an explicit action — either by an administrator or by the subscriber themselves.
 

When the Status Is Updated

There are two main scenarios in which the "HTML enabled" status is updated:

1. Data Operations by Administrators

Updates occur when a system administrator manipulates data within Marketing Cloud Engagement, either directly or indirectly.

  • Direct Editing: An administrator manually changes the status in the "All Subscribers" list UI by opening a subscriber's properties

  • Data Import: An administrator imports a subscriber list (e.g., from a CRM or external database) using the Import Wizard or Import Activity and overwrites the existing "HTML Enabled" attribute values.

  • API Updates: If your system is integrated with an external membership or web form system via API, the "HTML enabled" status can be updated in Marketing Cloud Engagement when a change is triggered on the external system's side.

2. Subscriber Actions in the Preference Center

Updates occur when a subscriber explicitly changes their receive settings via the link typically found in email footers.

  • Profile Center Changes: If a subscriber accesses the standard Profile Center or a custom preference page, selects their preference for HTML or Text emails, and saves the settings, the status will be updated in the system.
