When working with connections to a Snowflake data source, users may encounter the following error:
"[Snowflake][Support] (40470) Conversion error at column... numeric value out of range. Error Code: A3E43C3B"
This error occurs when the impacted Snowflake data source has a numeric data type field containing a number value that falls outside of the allowable Number( Whole) range supported by Tableau.
In Snowflake connections with Tableau, numeric data type fields are retrieved as SQL_C_SBIGINT type fields when Number (Whole) is used. The Number (Whole) range is from values of -9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 9,223,372,036,854,775,807. Numeric data types have a maximum precision of 38 digits.
The error message above was added to alert users when numeric fields exceed the allowable range for Numbers (Whole) in Snowflake data sources. This error message is included in Tableau Cloud and Tableau Desktop, Tableau Prep Builder and Tableau Server product versions 2025.3.1, 2025.2.5, 2025.1.10, 2024.2.17, and later. In earlier versions of the product users would not receive an error, but could see incorrect data for values exceeded the maximum range for Numbers (Whole).
The information in this article applies to all Tableau products which can connect to Snowflake, including:
Change data type of impacted field(s) from Number (Whole) to Number (Decimal) or String.
See the Tableau Product Help for information about how to change field Data Types.
