How to Set Up Row-Level Security (RLS) in Tableau Next

Access permissions for Tableau Next and Data 360 (DLO, DMO, and Data Governance)
Task

Configuring Row-Level Security (RLS)

In Tableau Next, Row-Level Security is managed through the Data 360 platform's security layers rather than within the visualization itself.

Steps

Step 1: Verify Data Stream Fields

Using Data Stream in Data 360, ensure that your DLO (Data Lake Object) or DMO (Data Model Object) includes the specific field required to apply RLS.

  • Example: If you need to restrict access to Opportunity data by the manager of the opportunity owner, the Opportunity DLO/DMO must contain the manager information field.

Step 2: Setup Access Policy in Data Governance

Navigate to Data Governance in Data 360 to create and configure an Access Policy for the specific DLO.

  1. Define the filtering criteria based on the attributes identified in Step 1.
  2. Save and activate the policy.

Note: For detailed instructions on creating and managing access policies, please refer to the documentations: Policy-Based Governance in Data 360, Assign Data Access

Step 3: Verify Policy Enforcement

The configured access policy will automatically apply to all Tableau Next Visualizations and Dashboards that are built upon the secured DLO/DMO.

Additional Resources

Current Limitations as of February 2026

  • No Native User Functions: Tableau Next does not currently support native user functions such as USERNAME() or FULLNAME() which are commonly used in Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server for RLS.
  • LWC Embedding: The Tableau Next LWC (Lightning Web Component) does not yet have the capability to filter embedded views dynamically using the logged-in user's session information.
