Salesforce is transitioning OAuth configurations from Connected Apps to External Client Apps (ECAs) as part of its security and architecture improvements. This migration affects how external applications, such as Tableau Server, authenticate and connect to Salesforce Data Cloud (Data 360).
Timeline:
Winter'26 Release (Release 258): New Connected App creation is disabled by default.
End of 2025: External Client Apps become the standard method for OAuth configuration.
End of 2026: Support for Connected Apps is scheduled to end.
Current Status (January 2026): Organizations should use External Client Apps for all new OAuth implementations.
