Marketing Cloud Engagement | Unable to Determine the Percentage of Recipients Who Viewed Emails in Plain Text Format

Kuvaus

Marketing Cloud Engagement does not provide a way to determine whether a recipient viewed an email in plain text format.

This article explains how open tracking works using a tracking pixel, the technical limitations that apply to the text part, and an alternative approach using link clicks.

Ratkaisu
MCE email open tracking relies on a 1×1 transparent tracking pixel automatically embedded in the email. When this pixel is loaded by the recipient's email client, an open is recorded. Because plain text emails cannot contain HTML tags, the tracking pixel cannot be embedded, and open data is not captured.

Therefore, when a multipart email is sent, you cannot determine the percentage of recipients who viewed the message in plain text (text part only).

Alternative Approach: Using Link Clicks

While you cannot detect whether the email itself was displayed in plain text, you can effectively treat a link click within the email as an indication that the recipient viewed the text version.

Important: Evaluate the data with the following considerations in mind:
  • Only a portion of recipients click links in an email, so link click data does not fully reflect the number of opens. Use this method as an alternative approach only.
  • Recipient-side security software may automatically scan (click) links in emails for threat detection. When evaluating link click data, account for the possibility that automated bot clicks may be included.
