This article explains the "Replace Inbox Messages" setting in Marketing Cloud Engagement MobilePush. This setting controls whether repeated sends of the same message type display a history of entries in the inbox or always replace with the latest single message.

The "Replace Inbox Messages" setting controls whether repeated sends of the same message type append to the inbox or always replace the existing message with the latest one. Use this when you intentionally want to overwrite existing messages with new content and always show users the most current information.

 

Behavior

When a message is sent repeatedly, the behavior differs based on the selected option:
  • Replace Inbox Message = No: Each time a message is sent, it is added as a new entry in the inbox. The user's inbox displays past messages as a history.
  • Replace Inbox Message = Yes: The newly sent message overwrites the existing message. The user's inbox always shows only the latest single message.

 

Applicable Send Method 

This setting is available for the following send types where repeated sends occur:
  • API Trigger
  • Inbox - Automation
  • Interaction (Journey Builder)

 

Important Notes:

  • Cannot modify already-delivered content: This setting is a mechanism to overwrite existing messages with the next message to be sent. It does not provide a way to directly edit or delete a message that has already been delivered and is in the user's inbox.
  • Scheduled sends: This setting option is not displayed for "Scheduled" sends, which are intended for one-time delivery.
