Metric Values are Automatically Abbreviated and Cannot Display Exact Single Digits in Tableau Pulse

Publish Date: May 21, 2026
Description

When viewing metrics in Tableau Pulse, values may display in an abbreviated format (e.g., "802.5K" or "3.5M"). Users who want to see detailed data at the single-digit level may notice that the system does not allow for the removal of these units or the display of the full integer by default.

Cause

This is a current product limitation of Tableau Pulse. The system automatically determines number formatting, including decimals, percentage styles, and abbreviations, based on the value's magnitude.

Resolution

Currently, there is no feature to completely override the automatic abbreviation behavior. However, you can use the following workaround for more detailed values.

Option: Adjust Decimal Places

Setting the decimal precision allows detailed digits to appear as part of the abbreviated value.

  1. Open the metric definition for editing.
  2. Increase the Decimal Places until the exact single-digit value displays (e.g., set to 3 for "K" abbreviations).
  3. The value will then appear as "802.485K". The unit remains visible, but the granular data is now accessible.

Note: Hiding the unit labels (e.g., "K", "M") within the Pulse interface is not possible at this time.
