Messaging Service (activemqserver) is in ERROR state During Upgrade

When upgrading Tableau Server from version 2024.2 to 2025.3, the upgrade fails with an error indicating that the ActiveMQ Messaging Service isn't stopped.

The following errors are observed from Tableau Server logs:

  • node1 has 1 service that isn't stopped: activemqserver_0.20253.26.0316.1545 (deployment state: INSTALL_FAILED, process status: DOWN)
  • 'Tableau Server Messaging Service 0' is in an error state.
                'com.tableausoftware.tabadmin.exceptions.ConfigurationException: config_failed_generate_config_files:Generating configuration files failed for activemqserver (errorCode=10)
  • Caused by: java.io.IOException: freemarker.core.InvalidReferenceException: The following has evaluated to null or missing:
    ==> activemqserver.jmx.password  [in template "activemqserver\\jmx.password.ftl" at line 18, column 9]

 

 

Ratkaisu

 

  • Manually update the activemqserver.jmx.password to any non-null, non-empty value, e.g.
    • tsm configuration set --key activemqserver.jmx.password -v ec8c3d2ea1f275752ad79a5d062ab202
    • tsm pending-changes apply
  • Re-run Tableau Server upgrade script, upgrade-tsm. Ensure the upgrade completes successfully.
  • (Optional, but recommended to ensure internal secrets are properly handled) Ensure you have a recent .tsbak Tableau Server backup. then run tsm security regenerate-internal-tokens to rotate all internal secrets, tokens, certs, and encryption keys.
