Bulk Export of Quip Content Using the Quip Admin API

You can use Quip's Admin API to programmatically export data from your site. Full documentation is available at Quip Admin API Documentation.

This article walks through the three phases of a bulk export: preparing your API credentials, retrieving the thread IDs you want to export, and running the export using either the Bulk API (for large volumes) or the Non-Bulk API (for small volumes).

Use the following steps to export Quip content programmatically using the Quip Admin API.

Phase 1: API Preparation

  1. Grant yourself an Admin Role that has the "Unredacted Audit Access to All Members & Content" permission. See How to Create the Unredacted Audit Access to All Members & Content Admin Role.
  2. Create an API Key (Client ID and Client Secret) by logging into the Quip Admin Console and choosing Settings > Integrations > New API Key.
  3. Get your Token: Get Access to Quip's APIs.

Phase 2: Retrieve IDs of Threads

Depending on which threads you want to export, use one of the following Admin API calls:

  1. List Threads API — Lists all threads for your site and supports paging. Use this if you want to export all threads on your site.
  2. Get Threads by a User — Returns threads which a specific user directly has access to.
  3. Get Threads Under a Folder — Returns IDs of threads directly under a folder. To export all threads under a folder, traverse all child folders to find all nested threads.

Phase 3: Export Quip Content ### Bulk API (Recommended for Large Volumes)

Recommended for exporting a large number of threads. Submit requests quickly without waiting for each export to finish — Quip returns a request ID per submission to track progress asynchronously.

Legacy Bulk PDF Export API (PDF only):

Non-Bulk API (Recommended for Small Volumes)

Preferred when exporting a small number of documents quickly.

Considerations for Bulk Export

  • Rate Limit: The Create Bulk Export Request and Create Bulk Export PDF Request APIs are subject to a per-company rate limit with a default of 36,000 documents exported per hour. If your API calls hit the rate limit, wait until the next hour to submit new requests.
  • Quip does not have a feature to export all company data in one folder or ZIP file in the native Quip folder structure.
  • Documents vary in size — some export quickly while others take longer. Use the Retrieve Bulk Export Response and Retrieve Bulk Export PDF Response APIs to track overall progress and per-thread export status.
