To enable Japanese search functionality on your site, you must specify the appropriate Japanese stemming option for the relevant locales under Merchant Tools > Search > Search Indexes > Language Options. There are two options for Japanese stemming: "Japanese" and "Japanese - improved". Using the standard "Japanese" stemming may cause issues where products do not appear in search results for certain compound words. This occurs because the "Japanese" stemming logic is designed to retain long compound words as a single compound token in the search index, in addition to splitting them into individual tokens.
Example of the Issue with the "Japanese" Stemming Option
For example, suppose your site's catalog contains a product named "マルチビタミンミネラルサプリメント" (Multivitamin Mineral Supplement). This product would be indexed as follows:
マルチビタミンミネラルサプリメント | マルチ | ビタミン | ミネラル | サプリメント
(Note: The full compound word is included in the index.)
If a user searches for the phrase "マルチビタミンミネラル" (Multivitamin Mineral), the search query is generated as:
マルチビタミンミネラル | マルチ | ビタミン | ミネラル
In this case, the compound token "マルチビタミンミネラル" in the query does not match the search index, causing the product to be excluded from the search results.
Lösung
To resolve this issue and improve search accuracy, we recommend using the "Japanese - improved" stemming option. To configure, navigate to Merchant Tools > Search > Search Indexes > Language Options, set the stemming for the applicable Japanese locale to "Japanese - improved", and then rebuild the search index.
How "Japanese - improved" Resolves the Issue
The "Improved" version is optimized to exclude the original compound word itself from the tokenization results. As such, the same product will now be indexed as:
マルチ | ビタミン | ミネラル | サプリメント
(Note: The full compound word is NOT included.)
When searching for "マルチビタミンミネラル", the query is generated as:
マルチ | ビタミン | ミネラル
Since the individual tokens in the query now match the individual tokens in the index, the product will correctly appear in the search results.
Examples of Compound Words
Similar to "マルチビタミンミネラルサプリメント", the following phrases are examples where the original compound word is included in the tokenization results under the "Japanese" stemming option. The "Japanese - improved" option resolves the search issues associated with these types of compound phrases.
- オーバーサイズトレンチコート (Oversized Trench Coat)
- エキストラバージンオリーブオイル (Extra Virgin Olive Oil)
- マイクロファイバーバスタオル (Microfiber Bath Towel)
