Tableau Table Extension UI Closes Unexpectedly / “Download to Excel” Not Working

This issue is caused by a conflict between Tableau’s allowed worksheet/dashboard naming conventions and the Tableau Table extension’s internal validation logic.

While Tableau allows certain special characters (e.g., :) in worksheet and dashboard names, the Tableau Table extension does not fully support these characters. This mismatch can lead to JavaScript errors within the extension, triggering repeated failed operations and resulting in:

  • Extension UI (Format dialog) closing unexpectedly
  • “Download to Excel” functionality failing
  • General instability after repeated interactions (saving, reloading, adding fields)

This behavior may be further amplified if the extension is not fully whitelisted in the environment.

Løsning

To resolve the issue, perform the following steps:

  1. Remove Special Characters from Worksheet/Dashboard Names
    • Avoid characters such as: : * ? \ / [ ]
    • Rename affected worksheets and dashboards to use only supported characters (e.g., alphanumeric, underscores)
  2. Ensure Extension is Whitelisted
    • Confirm that the Tableau Table extension host is added to the organization’s trusted/whitelisted domains
    • This ensures the extension runs in a fully trusted mode without restrictions
  3. Re-test the Workbook
    • Open the workbook in Tableau Desktop and/or Tableau Cloud
    • Validate that:
      • The Format Extension dialog remains stable
      • “Download to Excel” functionality works as expected
  4. (Optional) Recreate the worksheet if issues persist
    • Duplicating or recreating sheets can regenerate underlying metadata and help eliminate residual inconsistencies
