Marketing Cloud Engagement | Contact Behavior When Activating a New Journey Builder Version

Publish Date: May 20, 2026
Description

This knowledge article explains how contacts in the old version behave when you activate a new version in Journey Builder.

Resolution

Behavior of Contacts Processing in the Old Version

When you activate a new version, the old version automatically transitions to "Finishing" status unless you explicitly click "Stop."

  • "Finishing" status: New contact entries into the old version will stop, but contacts already entered continue processing through each activity in the old version.
  • "Stopped" status: New contact entries into the old version will stop, and contacts already in progress are immediately ejected from the activity they are currently in.
Difference Between "Stopped" and "Finishing"
StatusContact ProcessingNew Entries
FinishingContinues to the last activity in the journey pathStopped
StoppedImmediately exits from the activity in progressStopped
Notes
  • In both "Finishing" and "Stopped" statuses, contacts may still be able to enter for up to 10 minutes.
  • If you stop a journey after a contact has already entered an email send activity, the actual send processing may proceed asynchronously after the contact is ejected from the activity. If this is a concern, also pause the email send job.

Whether Contacts Can Enter the New Version

Whether contacts who have processed in the old version can enter the new version depends on the journey's Contact Entry Mode setting. This setting applies across versions.

  • No Re-entry: Contacts can enter the journey only once. Contacts currently processing or already processed in the old version cannot enter the new version again.
  • Always Re-entry: Contacts can enter the new version at any time, even if they are currently processing or have already completed the old version. This means a contact can be in both versions simultaneously.
  • Re-entry Only After Completion: Contacts can enter a new journey only when they are not currently in the journey. Contacts processing in the old version are not entered into the new version.
