Unable to Completely Clear Custom Value List Filter with Over 200 Items in Web Edit Mode (Tableau Cloud/Server)

Udgivelsesdato: Jun 9, 2026
Beskrivelse

Environment:

  • Tableau Cloud
  • Tableau Server
  • Web Authoring (Web Edit)

Symptoms:

  • When clearing a "Custom value list" filter with more than 200 items in Web Edit mode, the list appears empty, but the filter is not fully cleared.
  • The summary still shows remaining selected values (e.g., "Selected 299 values").
  • No error message is displayed.

When editing a filter in Web Edit mode using the "Custom value list" option and attempting to clear the list, only the currently displayed 200 items are deleted, leaving the remaining hidden values uncleared within the filter.

This behavior is related to a design limitation in Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server intended to optimize client-side rendering performance by paginating lists at 200 items.

Cause:

A design limitation (By Design) in Tableau Cloud and Tableau Server to maintain environment and client-side performance.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Log on to Tableau Cloud or Tableau Server as a Creator and create a new workbook.

  2. Drag a field containing more than 200 distinct values (e.g., [ID]) onto the Filters card.

  3. When the Edit Filter dialog appears, keep the list type as "Select from list".

  4. Scroll down the list to the bottom and notice the page break at every 200 items.

  5. Check "(All)" to select all values, then uncheck the first value.

  6. Switch the list type to "Custom value list".

  7. Verify that only 200 items are displayed via the scroll bar, then click [OK] to save.

  8. Right-click the field on the Filters card and choose [Edit Filter] to reopen the dialog.

  9. Observe that the summary shows "Selected 499 values" (more than 200) while only 200 items are displayed in the list.

  10. Click the [Clear List] button. The list will appear empty.

  11. Click [OK] to save changes.

  12. Reopen [Edit Filter] again. Observe that the summary now says "Selected 299 values" (not 0), and the next page of 200 items has appeared, proving the list was not fully cleared.
