Tableau Server 2025.3 and newer in Windows: tsm maintenance backup/ziplog fails when specified filename contains CJK characters

Publish Date: Jun 11, 2026
Description
After upgrading Tableau Server from v2024.2.2 to v2025.3.2, various tsm maintenance commands (such as backupziplogs, etc.) now throw an error if the specified filename contains Japanese characters. This syntax worked without any issues in v2024.2 and earlier.
Note: This issue has been confirmed to occur on Windows only. Tableau Server running on Linux is not affected.

Error message example:

C:\Windows\system32\tsm maintenance backup -d -f バックアップ.tsbak

An error occurred on the server generating the backup.
See 'C:\ProgramData\Tableau\Tableau Server\data\tabsvc\logs\tabadmincontroller\tabadmincontroller_*.log' on Tableau Server nodes running the Administration Controller process for server log information.

Resolution

Generate the file using an English name, and then rename it to the desired Japanese name using OS commands (either manually or via a script).
