Tableau Cloud Site Admin unable to remove Tableau Cloud user with no content due to error: "User <username> could not be deleted because they own content.“

Publish Date: Jun 12, 2026
Description
A site administrator was unable to remove a Tableau Cloud user and received an error stating the user could not be deleted because they own content. The administrator had already transferred the visible content and still could not find any remaining owned content.
Resolution

1. Review the user account and site content locations for hidden or system-level assets before deleting the user:

  1. Check the user profile tabs
  2. Search all projects including hidden or nested projects
  3. review alerts and subscriptions
  4. check advanced assets, and verify whether any owned items remain in the recycle bin.

2. If no content is visible and the deletion still fails, change the recycle bin retention policy to 1 day, wait 24 hours, and then try removing the user again.:

  1. In Tableau Cloud, go to Settings from the left navigation
  2. open the General tab and scroll to Recycle Bin
  3. enable Allow Recycle Bin for this site if needed, select 1 day, and click Save.
  4. After the user is removed successfully, you can revert the recycle bin retention period to a longer timeframe.
