Field Service Permission Sets Update Fails with Error: AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED

When does this issue occur?

This issue occurs when a Salesforce administrator attempts to update Field Service permission sets in the Field Service Admin app. The following steps reproduce the error:

  1. Navigate to the Field Service Admin app.
  2. Go to Field Service Settings > Getting Started > Permission Sets.
  3. Click Update Permissions on either the FIELD SERVICE DISPATCHER or FIELD SERVICE RESOURCE permission.
  4. The page displays the error: AN ERROR HAS OCCURRED.

What does the error mean?

When checking the browser developer console (Network or Console tab), the following message appears:

Visualforce Remoting Exception: Operation failed due to fields being inaccessible on Sobject PermissionSet, check errors on Exception or Result!

Note: A Visualforce Remoting Exception occurs when a server-side Apex (Salesforce backend) call fails, often due to missing field access or permission configuration. PermissionSet is the Salesforce object that stores permission set configurations.

Overview

The error occurs because one or more required system permissions have been disabled on the underlying Field Service license permission sets. These permissions are enabled by default in a standard Salesforce org, so their absence indicates a configuration change was made in the past.
The following steps explain how to identify and re-enable the missing permissions.

Step 1: Identify the Affected Permission Sets

Field Service license permission sets are typically named using the pattern: Field Service <Feature> License (for example, "Field Service Resource License").
Depending on which button triggered the error, check the relevant permission set(s) in the next steps.

Step 2: Re-enable Permissions for FIELD SERVICE RESOURCE

If the error occurs when clicking Update Permissions on the FIELD SERVICE RESOURCE permission, check the following:

  1. Navigate to Setup > Permission Sets > Field Service Resource License.
  2. Click System Permissions.
  3. Verify that Field Service Scheduling is enabled. If it is disabled, enable it and save.

Also check:

  1. Navigate to Setup > Permission Sets > Field Service Mobile License.
  2. Click System Permissions.
  3. Verify that Field Service Mobile is enabled. If it is disabled, enable it and save.

Step 3: Re-enable Permissions for FIELD SERVICE DISPATCHER

If the error occurs when clicking Update Permissions on the FIELD SERVICE DISPATCHER permission, check the following:

  1. Navigate to Setup > Permission Sets > Field Service Dispatcher License.
  2. Click System Permissions.
  3. Verify that Field Service Dispatcher is enabled. If it is disabled, enable it and save.

Step 4: Investigate the Root Cause Using Setup Audit Trail

The above system permissions are enabled by default on Field Service license permission sets. If they are found to be disabled, a configuration change was made at some point in the past.
To investigate:

  1. Navigate to Setup > Setup Audit Trail.
  2. Filter or search for changes to the affected permission set (Field Service Resource License, Field Service Mobile License, or Field Service Dispatcher License).
  3. Look for entries where a permission was changed from Enabled to Disabled.
  4. Identify when the change occurred and who made it.
