Impact of Setting User Passwords When Using SSO in Tableau Server

Fecha de publicación: Jul 6, 2026
Descripción

When Tableau Server is configured to use Single Sign-On (SSO), the Identity Provider (IdP) manages the primary authentication process. As a result, passwords managed locally within Tableau Server operate independently of SSO authentication via browser under standard conditions.

Actions Managed Separately from SSO via browser

Users can continue to sign in via SSO even after the following administrative actions are performed in Tableau Server (because passwords managed within Tableau Server function independently of SSO via browser authentication):

Note: To change the credentials used for SSO via browser, the IdP administrator must update directly on the IdP side.

Scenarios where the Tableau-set Password is Required

The password set within Tableau Server will be required or affect behavior in the following specific cases:

For more information, see Authentication for Tableau Desktop or Mobile (Error "Invalid username or password" Signing Into Tableau Server from Tableau Desktop) and Configure Server-Wide SAML.

  • Exception Configurations (AD/LDAP Integration): In specific environments where the IdP and Tableau Server's Identity Store reference the same user directory (AD/LDAP), changes to the external identity store password may affect SSO behavior. This applies to the following configurations:
    • (A) When the external Identity Store (e.g., on-premises AD) is configured to synchronize passwords with the IdP (e.g., via Microsoft Entra Connect with Password Hash Synchronization), and Microsoft Entra ID is used as the IdP with Server-wide SAML configured.

    • (B) When using on-premises AD as the Identity Store and ADFS as the IdP with Server-wide SAML configured.

    • For more details regarding combinations where an external identity store is used alongside browser-based SSO (SAML), see the compatibility matrix in Authentication.
