Quip Admin Guide: Connecting Your Quip Team to Slack

What is Quip to Slack Conversion?

Quip to Slack conversion allows your team to convert Quip documents into Slack canvases so that your content lives directly in Slack — enabling a smooth, simple way for Quip users to move in progress and frequently accessed documents out of Quip and into Slack as the Quip product moves toward retirement. As a Quip admin, you'll need to connect your Quip organization to your Slack workspace before your users can start converting documents.

How to Connect Your Quip Team to Slack

  1. Sign in to Quip as an admin and open the Admin Console.
  2. Navigate to Slack Conversion > Settings in the left sidebar. Note that admins using a custom role must have edit access to “Slack Conversion Settings” permissions to make changes to this menu. Admins with "Site Admin" or "Super Admin" roles should have these permissions by default.
  3. In the Quip to Slack Connection section, fill in the following fields:
    1. Slack Team ID (Required) — Your Slack workspace or org ID. It starts with "T" or "E" and can be found in your browser URL when signed in to Slack (e.g. app.slack.com/client/T00000000).
    2. Slack URL (Required) — Your Slack workspace URL (e.g. your-domain.slack.com). You can find this by clicking the workspace name in the top left corner of Slack.
    3. Preferred Email Domain (Optional) — If some of your Quip users have multiple email addresses that could match to multiple Slack accounts within the same Slack team, entering a domain here (e.g. example.com) tells the system which account to match them with.
  4. Click Send Connection Request.
  5. In the confirmation dialog, click Send Request. This sends a connection request to your Slack workspace admin for approval.
  6. Wait for your Slack admin to approve the request. You'll receive an email notification once the request has been approved or denied. You can also check the status at any time from this same settings page. If not approved or denied within 7 days, the request will expire.
  7. Once approved, Quip will automatically begin matching user accounts by email address across Quip and Slack. A banner will appear on the Slack conversion settings page confirming that account matching is in progress.
  8. When account matching is complete, your users will be able to start converting documents.
Note: If you need to find your Slack Team ID or URL, see the Slack help article: Locate your Slack URL or ID.

After Setup: Managing the Slack Conversion Experience

Once your connection is approved and account matching completes, your users will see a Convert to a Slack Canvas option when viewing Quip documents that are compatible with Slack canvas. You have several settings available to control this experience.

Settings Available

All settings are located in Admin Console > Slack Conversion > Settings, below the org configuration section.

  • Allow Quip to Slack canvas conversions — This toggle controls whether users can convert documents. Turning it off prevents all conversions but preserves your connection and configuration. You can turn it back on at any time.
  • Allow Quip to Slack canvas conversion undo — When enabled, users can undo a conversion, which deletes the Slack canvas and makes the original Quip document editable again.
  • Restrict who can convert documents — When enabled, only users you add to an allow-list can convert documents. When disabled, anyone with access to a document can convert documents. When disabled, anyone with access to a document can convert it.
Note: These settings are configurable before you submit your connection request, but they won't take effect until the Slack admin has approved the connection and account matching is complete.

Managing Account Matching

Navigate to Slack Conversion > Account Matching to view and manage how Quip users are matched to Slack users:

  • Click Match Accounts (or Re-match Accounts) to run the matching process again — for example, after new users join your organization. You may re-match accounts at any time, but usually there is no need to initiate this process manually, account matching will automatically recur multiple times per day without any action from the admin.
  • Review matched and unmatched accounts to identify any users who may need attention.
  • You can update the Preferred Email Domain on the Settings page at any time to adjust how accounts are matched.

Disabling or Deleting the Connection

  • To temporarily pause conversions: Turn off the "Allow Quip to Slack canvas conversions" toggle. Your connection and matched accounts remain intact.
  • To permanently remove the connection: Click Delete Quip-to-Slack Connection on the Settings page. This will permanently disconnect your Quip organization from Slack and prevent all future conversions. To reconnect later, you will need to submit a new request, get Slack admin approval, and re-match accounts.
  • To cancel a pending request: If your request hasn't been approved yet, click Cancel Request to withdraw it. You can submit a new request at any time.
