DocumentCategoryDocumentType Object Missing in Org

When Discovery Framework and Document Checklist Items are enabled in Financial Services Cloud, users may expect to find the DocumentCategoryDocumentType junction object in Object Manager to link Document Types (DocumentType) to Document Categories (DocumentCategory).

However, in some cases the junction object does not appear at all, or custom-profile users can see DocumentType & DocumentCategory but not DocumentCategoryDocumentType.

Even-

  • The Document Checklist permission set is assigned
  • Read access is granted on ContentDocument, ContentDocumentLink, and ContentVersion
  • DocumentType and DocumentCategory are visible in Setup

This issue affects internal users with custom profiles and permission sets used by document review users.

Cause 1: Unsupported Org Edition
  1. From Setup, search for Company Information and select it.
  2. Check the Organization Edition field. DocumentCategoryDocumentType is only available in Professional, Enterprise, and Unlimited Editions with FSC enabled — not in Performance Edition.
  3. If your org is on Performance Edition, the junction object will not appear regardless of permissions. You'll need a supported edition to access it.

Prerequisite Features May Not Fully Enabled:
  1. From Setup, search for Document Checklist and enable the Document Checklist Item setting.
  2. From Setup, search for Discovery Framework and enable it.
  3. Refresh Object Manager and search for Document Category Document Type [DocumentCategoryDocumentType].
Cause 3: Missing Object and Field Permissions:
  1. From Setup, go to Permission Sets and confirm the Document Checklist permission set is assigned to the affected user.
  2. Additionally, assign the Industries Assessment permission set to the user — this is required to expose the DocumentCategoryDocumentType object to custom profiles.
