Viz in Tooltip Does Not Render When Double-Clicking a .twbx File in Tableau Desktop in Windows 11

Description

When opening a packaged workbook (.twbx) from within an already running Tableau Desktop application (via File > Open), the workbook functions normally. However, when launching Tableau Desktop by double-clicking the saved .twbx file directly, the Viz in Tooltip does not render when hovering over target worksheets on dashboards.

Error Details:

There are no error messages displayed; the Viz in Tooltip simply fails to show.

Environment:

The issue is under investigation in W-23451422. This issue is localized to specific machine environments and is likely related to how Tableau Desktop 2025.3 and later versions when directly launching a .twbx file via double-click.

  • Tableau Desktop (Versions 2025.3.5 and later, including 2026.2.0)
  • OS: Windows 11 
Resolution

Please try to use one of the following options:

 

Option 1: Open the workbook from within the Tableau Desktop application

  1. Launch the Tableau Desktop application first.
  2. Navigate to File > Open and select the target .twbx file.

 

Option 2: Save and use the file as a standard workbook (.twb)

Unpack or save the affected .twbx file as a standard .twb file. Double-clicking a .twb file completely resolves the issue, and Viz in Tooltip displays normally.

 

Option 3: Use an unaffected version of Tableau Desktop

If possible, use Tableau Desktop version 2025.3.4 or earlier (e.g., version 2025.2.5), which does not exhibit this behavior.
