On a dashboard where several worksheets filter one another through filter actions, an author may add a Viz in Tooltip (for example, a line chart showing history) intended to reflect the currently selected filter state at the established granularity. In this configuration the embedded tooltip viz filters inconsistently — it intermittently shows the correct filtered subset, but generally falls back to displaying the total for the target sheet rather than applying the active filters.
The trigger is the combination of two independent filtering mechanisms acting on the same field(s):
Because a Viz in Tooltip filters on the fields of the hovered mark (by default <All Fields> in the tooltip markup), and filter actions apply based on the selected mark, the two compete. Tableau does not maintain a precedence hierarchy that distinguishes a field filtered by an action filter from the same field filtered by a tooltip filter, so the results conflict. The hover-driven tooltip filtering does not reliably respect the action-filter selection, which is why the embedded viz appears to ignore the filters and show totals.
This is expected product behavior arising from the design of the two features, not a defect in a specific version.
There is no setting that establishes precedence between an action filter and a tooltip filter on the same field. Resolve the conflict by decoupling the two mechanisms using one of the following approaches:
Replace the Viz in Tooltip with a navigation link to the target viz. Instead of embedding the viz in the tooltip, provide a link (or a Go to Sheet / filter action navigating to a target dashboard or sheet) so the target opens with the current filtering applied. This avoids the hover-based tooltip filter entirely.
Set the Viz in Tooltip to filter on click rather than hover. In the source worksheet, open Worksheet ▸ Tooltip and configure the embedded sheet reference so it responds to a click/select rather than hover. Caveat: this produces an inconsistent user experience — the tooltip viz shows different (unfiltered) data until the specific mark is clicked, and then must be clicked to remove the filter.
Restructure so a viz filtering is done by creating a SET. This has some of the same downsides as number 2, but on a per-sheet basis we can arrange for the tooltip to filter based on a Set of the data that is clicked or hovered. There may be some lag time waiting for the filters to take effect, so this can still be less consistent for a user, but will at least show the viz filtered as desired once filters are resolved.
