Tableau Server Linked Tasks Fail to Run After Creator User is Deleted

Publiceringsdatum: Jul 27, 2026
Beskrivning

In Tableau Server, a scheduled Linked Task for Tableau Prep flows may stop executing if the user who created the linked task is deleted. The following symptoms may occur:

  • The Linked Task fails to start at the scheduled time.
  • No error messages or alerts are displayed in the Tableau Server UI.
  • No failure notifications are sent to administrators or owners.
  • In the Backgrounder logs (backgrounder.log), an error similar to the following is recorded:

ERROR com.tableausoftware.backgrounder.runner.BackgroundJobRunner - activity=backgrounder-job-error ... excp_msg=com.tableausoftware.server.status.reporting.TableauRuntimeException excp_type=java.util.concurrent.ExecutionException ... excp_cause_type_2=java.lang.NullPointerException ...

This can be reproduced in 2024.2 or later.

Workaround

To restore the scheduled execution, an active user must recreate the Linked Task.

  1. Sign in to Tableau Server as an administrator or a user with the appropriate permissions.
  2. Locate the flows that were part of the original Linked Task.
  3. Delete the existing (non-functional) Linked Task.
  4. Create a new Linked Task with the same flow sequence and schedule.

Repro Steps

  1. Sign in to Tableau Server as site admin
  2. Publish two flows in Tableau Server
  3. Create a Creator user such as "user1" in Tableau Server
  4. Chenge the permission for the published flows to allow "user1" to be able to create a scheduled task for flows
  5. Create a custom schedule that will start to run within a couple of minutes
  6. Sign out Tableau Server
  7. Sign in to Tableau Server as "user1"
  8. Create a linked task under one of the flows using the custom schedule
  9. Wait for the linked task to run as scheduled
  10. After the linked task is run and succeeded, sign out Tableau Server
  11. Sign in Tableau Server as site admin
  12. Delete "user1"
  13. Make changes to the custom schedule so that it will run again within a couple of minutes
  14. Wait for a couple of minutes and the linked task does not run this time. No error message is present.
