To keep free access supported and secure, we're retiring activation for older versions of Tableau Desktop on the free plan. After August 31, 2026, customers need version 2026.2.1 or newer to continue using Tableau Desktop for free.
Why is Salesforce making this change?
Older releases no longer receive the security and reliability updates we ship with each Tableau Desktop version. Limiting the free plan to currently supported versions is how we keep Free Edition safe to use and consistent for everyone.
What does this mean for you?
If you update to 2026.2.1 or newer before August 31, 2026, nothing else changes — you'll keep using Tableau Desktop on the free plan as usual.
If you stay on an older version past August 31, 2026, Tableau Desktop will show an error message and won't function with a free license on that device. Your local files (.twb / .twbx) aren't affected and will open normally once you update.
This change does not affect paid Tableau Desktop activations. If you use Tableau Desktop with a paid Creator license — through your employer or a personal subscription — you can continue on your current version.
