Marketing Cloud Next - Understand List-Unsubscribe Header Functionality

Julkaisupäivä: Sep 9, 2026
Kuvaus

All Marketing Cloud Next emails with a promotional classification contain a list-unsubscribe header, which provides a one-click unsubscribe option for the recipient server and helps fulfill this requirement.

Even if your email contains a properly formatted list-unsubscribe header, inbox providers like Gmail or Yahoo may not display the one-click unsubscribe option.  This option is generated from the List-Unsubscribe (and List-Unsubscribe-Post) email headers. Inbox providers like Gmail and Yahoo use algorithms to determine the trustworthiness of a sender before deciding to display the one-click unsubscribe. Marketing Cloud has no direct control over whether the one-click unsubscribe displays in the inbox.

Ratkaisu

How Does the Unsubscribe from List-Unsubscribe header behave?

When an unsubscribe originates from the list-unsubscribe header from inside an email client/inbox, it is processed in Marketing Cloud Next as a subscription level unsubscribe. When used, the email address will be opted out of the specific Communication Subscription tied to to the original email send. You'll see the contact point's status reflected in the Communication Subscription Consent DMO and also an Unsubscribe event in the Email Engagement DMO with source of CLIENT_HEADER.

Can I modify the List-Unsubscribe header or its behavior?

No, you cannot modify the URL used for the list-unsubscribe header. It cannot be directed to any other customer-owned endpoint.
