Design Principles for CRM Analytics Dashboards
Use design principles to decide what to include, what to leave out, and how to arrange what remains in a CRM Analytics dashboard.
Keep four principles in mind as you design a dashboard.
- Clarity. Show one clear message per view. Remove anything that doesn't help the user answer a question or take an action. When a chart needs a long caption to be understood, simplify the chart or the data behind it.
- Efficiency. Help users reach an answer in as few steps as possible. Put the most important information where it's seen first, and let users drill in for detail instead of showing everything at once.
- Consistency. Reuse the same colors, labels, chart types, and layout patterns across a dashboard and across related dashboards. With consistency, users apply what they already know instead of relearning each view.
- Beauty. A well-organized, uncluttered dashboard with balanced spacing and a restrained color palette builds trust and keeps users engaged. Aesthetics support comprehension.
Apply four visual design principles to arrange each view.
- Contrast. Make important elements stand out with size, color, or font weight. Use light grays for secondary elements and backgrounds.
- Repetition. Reuse consistent styles, fonts, colors, and placement across pages and dashboards to build familiarity.
- Alignment. Align elements to clean lines to improve flow and readability.
- Proximity. Group related items together, and limit each group to about four or five items.
Leave white space so that the layout is easy to scan. Add reference lines, such as an average or a target, to help the audience spot trends and outliers at a glance.
