Organize Dashboard Pages with Visual Hierarchy

Organize Dashboard Pages with Visual Hierarchy

Arrange each dashboard page so that users read it in a natural order, from the big picture to the detail.

Use dashboard pages to tell a layered story in a single dashboard instead of building many separate dashboards. Pages also improve load time, because only the queries on the default page run when the dashboard opens.

Lead with a headline, then body, then details

  • Headline. Place the key measures and takeaways at the top, where users look first.
  • Body. Below the headline, show the charts that explain and break down those measures.
  • Details. Place granular tables and reference information last, for users who need to dig in.

Choose a layout pattern that guides the eye

  • F-pattern. Users scan across the top, then down the left side. Use it for content-dense dashboards with many widgets.
  • Z-pattern. The eye moves top-left to top-right, then diagonally to the bottom. Use it for simpler dashboards with a clear call to action.
  • Side-by-side. Place related views next to each other to support direct comparison, such as this period versus last period.

Group and align for clarity

  • Use container widgets to group related widgets and to separate sections.
  • Align widgets to a consistent grid and keep spacing even.
  • Use labels and section colors to reinforce the grouping.
  • Leave white space so that each section is easy to distinguish.

Design for where the dashboard is viewed

  • Show full detail in a standalone app.
  • Show fewer, higher-level metrics when you embed a dashboard in a record page or the Home page.
