CRM Analytics MCP Server Troubleshooting and Tips

CRM Analytics MCP Server Troubleshooting and Tips

Resolve connection and permission issues, and use prompts and practices that help AI clients query CRM Analytics data more accurately.

Required Editions

Available in Lightning Experience.
Available with CRM Analytics, which is available for an extra cost in Enterprise, Performance, and Unlimited Editions.

General Connectivity Issues

  • Server connection fails: Confirm that CRM Analytics MCP server is on in Setup under MCP Servers. Also confirm that you created an external client app with the correct callback URL. Then confirm that you signed in to the org that contains that app before you started the OAuth flow.
  • No tools appear: Confirm that your MCP client uses the correct server URL for your org type and that each user completed OAuth with their own Salesforce credentials. CRM Analytics MCP server doesn't support service account tokens.
  • Production org: CRM Analytics MCP server is available in production orgs, as well as sandbox and scratch orgs. Use the server URL that matches your org type:
    • Production: https://api.salesforce.com/platform/mcp/v1/analytics/crma-beta
    • Sandbox or scratch org: https://api.salesforce.com/platform/mcp/v1/sandbox/analytics/crma-beta

Data and Tool Access

Your MCP session runs as you. Because authentication uses your Salesforce credentials, every request respects Field-Level Security (FLS), Object-Level Security (OLS), Row-Level Security (RLS), and sharing rules. The AI client can never see data or assets that you can't see in CRM Analytics.

  • Missing datasets, dashboards, or lenses: If the client reports that an asset is unavailable, or a list_ call returns fewer items than you expect, you likely lack permission to that asset. Confirm that you have access to the app or asset and that your permission set grants CRM Analytics access.
  • API limits: MCP tool calls count against your org's Wave API limits. Check usage in Setup under API Usage.

See the Troubleshooting Guide for more information.

Tips for Better Results

  • Describe the goal, not the tool: Say "Show me open opportunities by stage" rather than "call list_datasets." The AI client selects the tools.
  • Improve query accuracy with field descriptions: Adding field labels and descriptions to your dataset extended metadata (XMD) helps the AI client generate more accurate SAQL.
  • Refine complex queries: Nested groupings, multi-dataset joins, or advanced SAQL functions can require follow-up prompts to get the exact result.

Example Prompts

Use these prompts in a new session to discover assets, inspect schema, and ask questions of your data.

User Prompt Tool Called Purpose
What analytics apps do I have access to? list_folders Returns the folders (apps) that hold your dashboards, datasets, and lenses. Use the results to scope later searches.
What CRM Analytics datasets do I have access to right now? list_datasets Retrieves dataset names, labels, and IDs available in your security context.
Show me all the dashboards in my Sales Application folder. list_dashboards Locates prebuilt dashboards for a specific app or business unit.
List all the saved explorations I'm permitted to view. list_lenses Gathers an inventory of saved lenses and the datasets they reference.
Give me the full metadata for the Executive Pipeline dataset. get_dataset Returns dataset details, including the current version ID needed to query it.
What are the exact fields, dimensions, and measures in the Opportunity dataset? get_xmd Provides field API names, data types, and labels so the client can build syntactically correct SAQL.
What were our top 10 accounts by revenue last fiscal year? execute_query Inspects the dataset schema, generates a SAQL query, and returns structured results.
What was the total pipeline by region last quarter? execute_query Performs grouping and filtering using SAQL.
Show me rep performance versus quota this month. execute_query Runs a query and returns rows and column metadata as structured JSON.
