Add Hierarchy Filters to Metrics (Beta)

Add Hierarchy Filters to Metrics (Beta)

After you add an organizational hierarchy to your semantic model, hierarchy levels become available as filter dimensions when you create or edit metrics, letting you scope a metric to specific branches of your organizational structure.

Note
Note Organizational Hierarchies in Tableau Semantics is a pilot or beta service that is subject to the Beta Services Terms at Agreements - Salesforce.com or a written Unified Pilot Agreement if executed by Customer, and applicable terms in the Product Terms Directory. Use of this pilot or beta service is at the Customer's sole discretion.

Using organizational hierarchy in metrics, a single metric definition serves everyone. On the Metric Details page, users can apply hierarchy filters to scope data based on their needs. For example, a manager can filter by "My Team" to see rolled-up totals for their reports, or an individual contributor can filter to see only their own data.

  1. Add the organizational hierarchy (Role or Manager) to your semantic model.
  2. Choose New | Metric.
  3. Complete the Details and Value steps as you would for any metric (name, measure, filters, time dimension).
  4. On the Additional Dimensions step, select the Select dimensions field.
Add Hierarchy Filters to Metrics (Additional Dimensions)
Your organizational hierarchy appears under an Organizational Hierarchy group heading. Select your hierarchy (for example, Manager) to add it as a dimension. Note that organizational hierarchy dimensions are not available in the insights step. Insights based on hierarchy data aren't supported.
    Note
Note Only hierarchies configured in your semantic model appear in the list. You can add one hierarchy type per semantic model.

You can now filter this metric by the organizational hierarchy on the Metric detail page. For example, you can select a specific manager or "My Team" to see aggregated data for their subordinates.
