Add an Organizational Hierarchy to a Semantic Model (Beta)

Add an organizational hierarchy to your semantic model to answer hierarchy-related analytics questions across your company's reporting structure such as "What's my team's revenue?" or "How is my region performing?", without requiring separate metric definitions for each level.

Before you can use organizational hierarchies in Tableau Semantics, complete these steps:

  • Configure hierarchies in Salesforce: Set up at least one organizational hierarchy (Role or Manager) in your Salesforce org User settings.

  • Set up a Salesforce CRM connector: Before ingesting data, configure a Salesforce CRM connector to connect your Salesforce org to Data 360. For more information, see Data Governance and Sharing in Tableau Next and Salesforce CRM Connector.
  • Ingest hierarchies into Data 360: Configure Data 360 to ingest the organizational hierarchies from your Salesforce org. This populates hierarchy logic in the User and UserRole DMOs. For more information, see Ingest Hierarchical Data.
  • Confirm the organizational hierarchy option is available: In your semantic model, click New and verify that Organizational Hierarchy is listed. You can then add it as a logical view object in the semantic model.
Note
Note Organizational Hierarchies in Tableau Semantics is a pilot or beta service that is subject to the Beta Services Terms at Agreements - Salesforce.com or a written Unified Pilot Agreement if executed by Customer, and applicable terms in the Product Terms Directory. Use of this pilot or beta service is at the Customer's sole discretion.
  1. In Tableau Semantics, open the semantic model you want to edit.
  2. On the Model canvas, click New and select Organizational Hierarchy.
    Note
Note Organizational Hierarchy appears as an option only after you've ingested at least one hierarchy into Data 360. If you don't see it, complete the prerequisites first.
  3. Choose either Role or Manager hierarchy from the available options.
    Note
Note : Only hierarchies configured in your Salesforce org appear in the list. You can add one hierarchy type per semantic model.
  4. Review the available fields from the selected hierarchy and select the fields you want to include.
    Select Organizational Hierarchy
    Note
Note Grayed-out fields are required and cannot be deselected.
  5. Click Next to add the hierarchy to your model.
  6. Enter a name, API name, and an optional description for the new hierarchy.
  7. Choose Save.
    Newly Created Organizational Hierarchy
The organizational hierarchy appears as a new object (logical view) on the model canvas. You can manually create relationships to connect it with other data objects as needed.
  8. In the left field panel, expand the Organizational Hierarchy object to view the list of fields.
Organizational Hierarchy Logical View with Object
  9. Locate your hierarchy (for example, "Manager") and expand it to view its fields.
  10. To add or remove fields, hover over the hierarchy type and click More options ().
  11. Save the semantic model.

After you add an organizational hierarchy, to preview your hierarchy data, click Test Model. Verify that level columns and user hierarchy fields are populated correctly.
