Override a Calculated Field or Metric in an Extended Model

Before You Begin

Make sure that you have created an extended model.

Override a Calculated Field

Override a calculated field to customize its formula or properties in your extended model.

Overriding a calculated field or metric lets you apply custom logic in your extended model while keeping the base model intact. After an override, the field or metric stops receiving updates from the base model until you revert it.

Note Overriding a display name, description, or visibility disconnects only that property. Overriding any other calculated field property disconnects the entire calculated field. Overriding any metric property disconnects the entire metric.

1. In the Semantic Model builder, open the extended model.
2. Locate the calculated field that you want to override.
3. Click Edit Calculated Field.

4. Select the property (or multiple properties) that you want to change, and enter new values.

   • When you update the display name, description, or visibility, only that property is overridden. All other properties stay connected to the base model and continue to receive updates. For more information, see Override a Field, Data Object, or Calculated Field Property.
   • When you update the formula expression, data type, aggregation, sentiment, data role, decimal places, treat Null as Zero, or filters, the entire calculated field disconnects from the base model and is considered overridden.
   • Other properties are not available for editing.
5. Save your changes.
6. When prompted, confirm the override.

An icon indicates that the calculated field is overridden. After the override, the calculated field no longer receives updates from the base model. Users who query the calculated field in the extended model see the overridden results.

To reconnect an overridden calculated field to its base model and restore the source definition, click Revert.

Override a Metric

Override a metric to customize its definition and expose it as a unique metric in your org.

1. In the Semantic Model builder, open the extended model.
2. Locate the metric that you want to override.
3. Click Edit Metric.

4. Select the property (or multiple properties) that you want to change, and enter new values.

   • When you update the metric display name, description, filter, time dimension, additional dimensions, or insights, the entire metric disconnects from the base model and is considered overridden.
   • Other properties aren’t available for editing.
5. Save your changes.
6. When prompted, confirm the override.

An icon indicates that the metric is overridden. After the override, the metric no longer receives updates from the base model. Users who query the metric in the extended model see the overridden results.

To reconnect an overridden metric to its base model and restore the source definition, click Revert.

Update a Dependent Metric After a Calculated Field Override

When you change a calculated field that one or more metrics depend on, a window opens and highlights the dependent metrics. Each dependent metric updates automatically based on the calculated field override, but doesn't appear to users on the browse page in Tableau Next.

To expose a dependent metric to users as a standalone metric in Tableau Next, give the metric a unique name or description, and then click Publish. The metric is overridden with the new name or description and appears on the browse page.

Limitations

• You can't change a calculated measure to a calculated dimension, or a calculated dimension to a calculated measure, as an override.
• Not all calculated field or metric properties are available for editing. Review the list of allowed properties in the relevant sections.
