Override Semantic Definitions in a Composed Semantic Model

When you create a composed model, the composed model inherits all property definitions from the referenced model. If you change any property definition, the new definition is defined as an override. An overridden property definition is not connected to the referenced model. As such, your overridden property definitions are not changed when the referenced model is updated. Properties without overrides on the other hand, remain connected to the referenced model data source and receive updates from it, keeping it as the source of truth. If you want to return to the original values, you can always revert the override and resume automatic updates.

Identify Overrides

The Semantic Model builder uses visual indicators to show which properties contain an override.

  • Override icon: A small unlinked icon appears next to an overridden property.
  • Color coding: Overridden properties can appear in a distinct color (for example, blue text).
  • Tooltip: Hover your mouse over the override indicator to see the current overridden value.

Limitations

Overrides are currently not supported for the following:

  • Restricted fields or data objects

  • Platform Data Source (PDS) semantic models

  • Unmapped fields and data objects

What You Can Override

This table summarizes what you can and can't do for each semantic definition type.

Semantic Definition What you Can Do
Data Object Field, Data Model Object (DMO), Data Lake Object (DLO), Calculated Insight, Logical View Override label, description, or visibility. Link an overridden property back to the referenced model field.
Data Object (DMO, DLO, Calculated Insight, Logical View)
  • Override label or description and link a property back to the referenced model.
  • Add new standard or custom fields to referenced semantic model data objects (DMO, DLO, logical view). Modify all properties of newly added fields.
Calculated Fields Override label, description, or visibility. Link an overridden calculated field property back to the referenced model calculated field property.
