This table describes the content, formatting, appearance, and display options that you can configure in a custom tooltip.

Option Description
Font

Select a font type and font size. Select a text color from the Default palette, or define a custom color with the color picker or a Hex or RGB value.

Text formatting

Apply bold, italic, or underline formatting to selected text. Click Clear formatting button in the Edit Tooltip dialog box to clear the formatting.

Alignment

Align text to the left, center, or right.

Fields and parameters

Insert fields used in the visualization and parameters defined in the semantic data model.

Background

Select a background color from the Default palette, or define a custom color with the color picker or a Hex or RGB value. Adjust the background opacity.

Settings

Choose whether to show the tooltip and command buttons. Command buttons allow you to include or exclude data directly from a mark.

Keep these factors in mind when reviewing the content of a default tooltip:

  • When the Marks card is divided into sections, each mark’s tooltip includes fields from the section associated with its pane and from the All section.
  • In a map that uses a combination of latitude and longitude fields to position marks, the tooltip includes the underlying latitude and longitude fields.

Customize Tooltips in Tableau Next Visualizations

Customize a tooltip to give analysts useful context as they examine a data mark in a visualization. Choose which fields and parameters to include, format the content to make key details easy to scan, and add command buttons that analysts can use to include or exclude data directly from the mark.
