Metric Insights in Tableau Next

Tableau Next detects unusual change, trends, drivers and contributors, and outliers for metrics. It proactively flags and describes insights using natural language.

Metrics insights are available in:

• Tableau Next home page metric cards, metric details pages, and dashboard view pages
• Slack as previews (when enabled)
• Salesforce apps through embedded Tableau Next dashboards

Metrics that you follow are displayed in the Tableau Next home page as metric cards.

You can open a metric card and explore it in more detail in a metric page.

A metric card and the metrics page in Tableau Next includes insights with the following information.

• The current, aggregated metric value for a given time period.
• The goal status, if a goal has been created.
• The amount of change from the prior period.
• A sparkline chart that shows how the metric has trended and if the value of the metric is unusual compared to the expected range for the time period. The expected range is based on patterns in historical data for the metric and is displayed as a blue shaded band in the chart.
  

  Note

  The expected range is based on a model that studies how a metric normally behaves based on historical performance. It uses a 95% confidence interval meaning: if the metric performs normally, it's expected to land within a certain range 95 times out of 100. When it falls outside that range, it's flagged it as unusual or unexpected.

  What is the forecast? The forecast is the system's best estimate of where your metric is headed, based on your own historical patterns. It learns from your past performance—including which days of the week, weeks of the month, and months of the quarter tend to be higher or lower—and projects that forward.

  What does the shaded range mean? The forecast comes with a range, not just a single number. That range represents the reasonable spread of outcomes based on how consistent your historical data has been. A narrower range means the system sees a clear, repeatable pattern in your data. A wider range means there's more variability—not that the forecast is wrong, just that outcomes are less predictable given your history.

• Filters applied as part of the metric definition.
• Adjustable filters for business users to customize their view of the metric
• Breakdowns for a metric show how different values in a metric are contributing to the total value, considering currently applied filters. You can click different dimensions to explore more breakdowns. Includes insights for top contributors and biggest decreases.

  

Tableau Next metrics are automatically generated from the analysis of the measures and dimensions referenced by the metric definition and data context. Each insight detected for a metric is deterministic and grounded in truth based on the metric.
