Boost and Bury Rules in Agentic Commerce Search

After Agentic Commerce Search for B2C Commerce determines initial results, boost and bury rules apply a targeted adjustment layer based on catalog attributes. Use them when AI-driven ranking alone doesn't reflect your business priorities.

Use boost and bury rules to apply business priorities without changing the underlying search algorithm. For example, promote a brand or demote products with specific attributes. Apply boost and bury rules sparingly to preserve the quality of AI-driven results. Both rule types use Broad Rank Boost or Relative Position Boost.

Broad Rank Boost and Bury

Broad Rank Boost pulls products up from anywhere in the result set, even from position 500+, to make them visible. Bury mode pushes products down throughout the entire result set, including products that normally rank at the top. Configure the strength as a percentage in Broad Rank Boost Settings.

Relative Position Boost and Bury

Relative Position Boost nudges products higher or lower within the top 240 results based on their current position. It doesn't reach products ranked under position 240 or pull them into view.

Selecting a Boost and Bury Mechanism

Use this guidance to select the right boost and bury mechanism:

  • Bring products ranked after position 240 into view: Use Broad Rank Boost to find them, then apply Relative Position Boost to adjust placement.
  • Adjust products in the top results: Use Relative Position Boost for campaign priorities, brand spotlights, or minor visibility adjustments.
  • Suppress clearance or out-of-season products sitewide: Use Broad Rank Boost (Bury) as a Global Rule to demote matching products throughout the entire result set.
  • Subtly demote visible products without removing them: Use Relative Position Boost (Bury) to lower products within the visible top results.
Example
Example

Boost scenario: A new brand ranks outside the top 240 results. Apply a Broad Rank Boost to bring the brand's products into the visible range. Then apply a Relative Position Boost to place featured products at the positions you want within the top results.

Bury scenario: Create a Global Rule with Broad Rank Boost (Bury) to suppress clearance products across all results. The rule pushes them lower throughout the entire result set without removing them from the catalog.
