Create a Synonym Rule for B2B Store

Create a Synonym Rule for B2B Store

Define one-way or two-way relationships to map buyer search words to your catalog data. Connect alternate phrasing, informal words, or regional terms to your exact product names to make sure that buyers find relevant products even when they use search terms that don’t exactly match your catalog.

          Required Editions

          1. In the navigation sidebar, select a store from the Store dropdown.
          2. Select Merchandising | Synonym Rules.
          3. Click New Rule.
          4. Select a rule type: One-Way or Two-Way.
            • One-Way (A → B): Query A retrieves products matching term B, but query B doesn't retrieve products for term A. Use one-way rules when buyers are likely to use informal or alternative terms to search for formal product names. For example, with a one-way, "phone charger" → "lightning cable," searching for "phone charger" returns products labeled "lightning cable," but searching for "lightning cable" returns only products with that exact term.
            • Two-Way (A ←→ B): All terms are treated as equals. Query A retrieves products for B, and query B retrieves products for A. Use two-way rules when terms are true synonyms. For example, with a two-way rule "couch" ←→ "sofa," searching for either term returns products labeled with both terms.
          5. Select the locales for this rule.
You can set the rule for a specific locale such as en-US, or for all locales.
          6. Enter the search term that buyers use.
For one-way rules, the search term is the query term (A). For two-way rules, the search term is one of the equivalent terms.
          7. Enter the matching term or terms from your catalog.
For one-way rules, enter the matching term in your catalog as the target term (B). For two-way rules, enter all equivalent terms separated by commas.
          8. Click Save.
If the rule conflicts with an existing rule, a warning appears. Common conflicts include phrase overlaps, redefining a term that exists in a two-way rule, or duplicates.
          9. Update the search index so that changes appear in your store. See Update the Commerce Search Index.
