Create a Semantic Model from the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI)

Create a Semantic Model from the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI)

Tableau Semantics supports the Open Semantic Interchange (OSI), an open-source standard for sharing semantic models across various platforms and tools.

          Key Benefits

          • Reusability: Companies can avoid manual recreation by reusing existing semantic definitions (dimensions, measures, relationships, and business logic) from external models like Snowflake, dbt, and so on.
          • Consistency: Companies can maintain a unified single source of truth across analytics tools and AI-powered experiences.

These resources provide additional information about OSI:

          • Learn more about OSI on the official website
          • View the open-source specification and translators on GitHub
          • View the Salesforce OSI Converter on GitHub

          Limitations

As OSI support is based on the early v0.1 specification, some capabilities are still evolving. Considerations include:

          • Calculated fields and metrics aren’t yet translated across platforms.
          • Certain metadata requires manual configuration or validation, as reflected in the OSI workflow.
          • Automatic synchronization between the original semantic model and Tableau Semantics is not supported.
          • Full access to the Tableau semantic model is required for a successful OSI conversion.
          • OSI v0.1 Overview
Tableau Semantics currently supports the initial release of the OSI open-source workflow (OSI v0.1).
          • OSI Workflow
The OSI workflow uses open-source translators and customer-managed infrastructure.
